Wrestling History
David Batista began his career training under Afa, The Wild Samoan in March 1999. He soon moved along to an Indy fed: World Xtreme Wrestling, wrestling under the name Kahn. After a WWE tryout, Batista was signed to a developmental contract in March 2000 and sent to Ohio Valley Wrestling, in Louisville Kentucky.
Almost nothing was known about the monster when he debuted in Ohio Valley Wrestling after being conjured up from the Ohio River after an occult ceremony conducted by Synn. He appeared to be a monster, simply named Leviathan, nicknamed the “Guardian of the Gates of Hell” and a man who seemed to match his awesome description – huge, powerful and almost impervious to pain. He rarely spoke, instead protecting Synn and destroying all in his path.
Despite being a rookie to the sport, he was quickly seen as a big-time player and thrown into huge matches with the biggest and the best from WWE. During The Big Show’s brief tenure in OVW, he was famously grounded by Leviathan’s spear. He even battled Kane, though The Big Red Machine got the better of the Demon. In one match The Undertaker and Kane teamed to take on Leviathan and Diamond Dallas Page at ‘The Last Dance’ – the final main event ever at the Louisville Gardens on June 27, 2001.
The awesome Leviathan destroyed all in his wake and his amazing power finally paid off with championship gold when he defeated Doug Basham for the Ohio Valley Wrestling Heavyweight Championship. He battled all in his path, before being robbed in controversial fashion February 23, 2002 at the hands of Prototype and Bolin Services.
In mid-May 2002 Leviathan’s manager Synn sold his contract to World Wrestling Entertainment’s D-Von Dudley, where he now serves as a ‘Deacon’ to D-Von’s unholy trinity. His work in OVW was far from done however. Synn ignored his request for an OVW Championship match, and punished him for disobeying her and growing a will of his own. She then cost him his championship rematch with Prototype on May 11 with a miscued fireball that sent the monster into a burning rage.
Leviathan garnered a measure of revenge in his last OVW appearance at Six Flags KY Kingdom on May, 31. There he lost a controversial match to Synn’s latest monster Seven, but left both Seven and Synn down and out courtesy of a Demon Bomb from hell.
Now his attentions were turned purely to WWE, where he continued to accompany Reverend D-Von, holding his collection box. The collection box appeared loaded, as Deacon became a key player in D-Von’s success, including the biggest victory of the Reverend’s career, over Triple H!
It was the week immediately following the King of the Ring however, when the might of Batista was finally revealed. He took off the suit and donned the wrestling trunks to compete in a tag match with D-Von against Randy Orton and Faarooq. Batista was only in the match for a minute, delivering a clothesline and spine buster that left Orton down and out. The following week Orton found a new partner in The Big Valbowski, but the results were just the same.
Batista was dominant.
As the weeks wore on, Batista continued to team with D-Von, despite his growing discontent at playing second fiddle. Tensions between the two erupted in September of 2002. Batista’s final SmackDown! match saw him giving the right Reverend a powerbomb before walking out on his contract.
During his hiatus, Batista’s size and seemingly unlimited athletic ability caught the eye of 16-time World Champion Ric Flair. Flair and Triple H have taken Batista under their wing and are intent on grooming the young Superstar into a championship contender. Of course, their guidance doesn’t come for free. Flair and The Game are more than willing to make use of Batista’s athletic prowess and surly attitude to further their interests when needed.
March 2003 saw Batista sidelined with a tricep tear suffered at a Pennsylvania house show . He is currently slated for a return this fall.
In October, Batista began rehab in OVW in route to a November return to Raw and Evolution. He ended 2003 by winning the Tag Team Championship, along with Ric Flair, from the Dudleys. Batista pinned D’Von for the win at Armageddon.
2004 started off as the Year of Evolution. Things fell apart when Triple H lost the title to Chris Benoit at Wrestlemania 20. Hungry for the opportunity, Randy Orton persued and won the belt from Benoit. Unfortunately for Orton, his win meant the end of his association with Raw’s elite stable. Now a threesome, Flair and Batista spent the summer backing Triple H up in his quest to regain and hold onto the belt. As the year wore down, it was becoming obvious that Batista was ready to make his own run for the top. Evolution was in a state of turmoil with Flair trying to keep the peace between a threatened HHH and an increasingly confident Batista. Following an impressive performance at the first PPV of 2005, New Year’s Revolution, Batista went on to win the Royal Rumble. As is the tradition, the Rumble winner automatically earns a title shot at Wrestlemania 21.
April 3, 2005. Dave Batista defeats his former mentor Triple H in the main event of Wrestlemania XXI. The next night, the new World Heavyweight Champion defeats former Evolution member, Randy Orton.
June 30, 2005. Batista is drafted to SmackDown where he begins a fued with JBL.
